Mayor Lee Kyriacou with an important COVID-19 update

This is Mayor Lee Kyriacou with an important COVID-19 update.

Your community spirit and cooperation drove our city’s COVID cases way down in the past several months, from a peak of close to 150, down to a handful.

In the last few days, however, the number of active COVID-19 cases in Beacon has ticked up, and then ticked up again today, with the current number on the county’s COVID tracking website at 45 for Beacon.

The county health department informed us that the increase is from one residential facility in the city limits, and has issued an order requiring isolation protocols for those involved.  Beacon police have been asked to assist in monitoring. To be clear, the large increase is from a single residential facility – not from Main Street businesses, or not from children returning to schools.

Beacon is doing exceptionally well.  We have carefully opened up much of our city activity, while keeping our COVID numbers way down – that is remarkable. Our job as individual members of this community remains unchanged:  Each of us must continue to do our part – social distancing and face coverings in public, quarantining if required, being respectful to all.  Everyone’s vigilance is essential to keeping us all safe.

What is a Food pantry?
A Food Pantry is where donated food sits on shelves for people to pick it up on certain times and days. Usually does not include expired items (the voluneers sort, and throw away) and some Food Pantries know about specific needs just for them, like if one Food Pantry says: “you know, we really need feminine hygene things actually.”.

Check Your Voter Registration

173,225 views•Aug 31, 2018LIKEDISLIKESHARESAVEUSAgov9.04K subscribersSUBSCRIBEIs your voter registration up-to-date? Even if you voted before, from time to time, states and local election offices purge their voter registration lists. They delete people who have moved or who haven’t voted in a long time. And sometimes there’s just an error. That’s why it’s a good idea to check your registration now to make sure you can vote on Election Day.

Start by finding your local election office at usa.gov/election-office. You may be able to check your registration Online By phone By mail or In-person

When you’re reviewing your voter registration, here’s what to look for: Your name is correct and still on the voter list Your address and party affiliation are up-to-date and You’re going to the correct polling place

If you can’t find your name on the voter list or your information is wrong, contact your election office right away to correct the error. Did you recently move or change your name? Depending on where you live, you’ll need to update your registration or re-register. Ask your election office. Sometimes just moving a few blocks away can actually change your polling place. And check your registration if you have not voted in the past couple of elections or you didn’t mail back a postcard from your election office. They might consider you inactive and purge your name from the voter registration list.

Don’t wait until Election Day to discover you can’t vote. Check your registration now. And learn more about voting at USA.gov/voting.

Governor Cuomo Announces Absentee Ballot Portal is Now Open and Requests Can Be Made Directly Online

All Registered New York Voters Can Request a Ballot Here

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the launch of New York’s absentee ballot portal where voters can directly request an absentee ballot for the upcoming November 3rd election. The Governor acted by Executive Order to allow any voter concerned about risk or exposure to COVID during the ongoing pandemic to request an absentee ballot.

“As the November election approaches we know that many voters feel vulnerable in the midst of this pandemic,” Governor Cuomo said. “In line with the sweeping reforms we have implemented to make it easier for New Yorkers to exercise their right to vote, today we launch the online portal through which every registered voter concerned about COVID-19 can obtain an absentee ballot. Voting is the cornerstone of democracy and we want each and every voter to feel safe and secure in the exercise of voting.”

Last month, Governor Cuomo signed into law sweeping election reforms that will make it easier for New Yorkers to vote and be counted in November. These new measures Include  allowing absentee ballot applications to be submitted to the Board of Elections immediately, allowing a voter to get an absentee ballot due to risk or fear of illness including COVID-19 and ensuring all absentee ballots postmarked on or before Election Day or received by the Board of Elections without a postmark on the day after the Election will be counted. Ballots with a postmark demonstrating that they were mailed on or before Election Day will be counted if received by November 10.

The Governor also issued an executive order to bolster and support New Yorkers’ right to vote. The order requires county boards of elections to take concrete steps to inform voters of upcoming deadlines, be prepared for upcoming elections and help ensure absentee ballots can be used in all elections.
