Tenzin Gyatso is the 14th Dalai Lama, serving as the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. A Nobel Peace Prize winner, he has dedicated his life’s work to promoting nonviolence and compassion between individuals and nations. Since the 1980s, he has also worked extensively with modern scientists to develop evidence-based techniques for mindfulness and well-being. His words here encourage us to look for the silver lining whenever we are faced with disappointment: Letting go of our expectations may lead to an even better outcome than what we thought we wanted.

Alice Walker is a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer with more than 30 literary works under her belt, including her most famous novel, “The Color Purple.” Her writing often explores the crossroads of race and gender — particularly centering the experiences of Black women. A former social worker and teacher, Walker also has a long history advocating for civil rights. “Activism is my rent for living on the planet,” she has said. Her commitment to equal rights and representation encourages us to stand up for our own beliefs and values, and to never let society or other people diminish our sense of self-worth.

Writer Terry Pratchett is best known for his 41-book “Discworld” fantasy series, which is based around the idea of a disc-shaped world that rests on the backs of four elephants, all standing atop an enormous turtle. His other work shows similar whimsy, from his 1971 novel about a fantastical world within a carpet (“The Carpet People”) to his 1991 collaboration with author Neil Gaiman about angels and demons (“Good Omens”). Pratchett’s creative prowess earned him numerous awards and accolades, including a British knighthood in 2009. With this advice, he encourages us to give more attention to the unique vision each of us offers, because the ability to see beyond what is in front of us is the very essence of humanity.

Legendary comedian Joan Rivers was just the second woman in U.S. history to helm her own late-night talk show. Before that opportunity arrived in 1986, she spent decades forging a path for future comics. In a 2012 interview with NPR’s “Fresh Air,” Rivers recalled her first break as a comedy writer: scripting dialogue for Topo Gigio, a mouse puppet slated to appear on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” While Topo Gigio’s 1961 debut could have been a one-off occurrence, Rivers’ words connected with the audience, and the puppet enjoyed an 11-year run on the series. During this time, Rivers became a familiar face on both “The Ed Sullivan Show” and “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” By consistently recognizing and accepting challenges, she expanded her career into the realms of author and entrepreneur. Attention Residents of Beacon Housing Authority … Additional COVID-19 Home Tests to be distributed

The City of Beacon has provided another round of free COVID -19 Home Tests which will be distributed on a first come first serve basis to residents of BHA.

Supplies are limited and will be distributed as follows:

  • Residents of Hamilton Fish Plaza can pick up a free COVID-19 Home Test on Friday February 18th, 2022 from 10am -11am at the Hamilton Fish Community Room
  • Residents of Forrestal Heights can pick up a free COVID 19 Home Test on Wednesday February 23rd, 2022 from 9am – 10am at the BHA Management Office.

Please mark the dates in your calendar. Masks will also be available upon request.

FREE MARKET PLACE IS COMING TO HAMILTON FISH PLAZA ON THURSDAY FEBRUARY 17, 2022

Attention residents of Beacon Housing Authority, the Fareground Organization will be distributing fresh fruit and vegetables along with pantry items at Hamilton Fish Plaza. All residents are encouraged to attend and partake in this program. Please bring your shopping bags and fill them up!

Fareground will be on site from 11:00am until 12:00pm. BHA is asking all residents wear a mask if you are not currently vaccinated. BHA is also asking residents to be kind to one another as well as to the volunteers from Fareground Organization. BHA appreciates their contribution and efforts at addressing the problem of food insecurity.

French writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, author of the classic 1943 novel “The Little Prince,” wrote often on themes of love, suffering, and connection. Saint-Exupéry himself was known for his long, complex marriage to writer and artist Consuelo de Saint-Exupéry, who inspired the character of the Rose in “The Little Prince.” In the book, the Prince and the Rose eventually realize that while they do love each other, they show it in different ways. With this line, Saint-Exupéry reminds us that true love should always feel nourishing.

Gov. Hochul COVID Update: Lifting Statewide Mask-or-Vaccine Requirement

Noah,   I want to give you an update on our progress in the pandemic and the blueprint for moving forward. Our overall cases, positivity rate, and hospitalizations are down, while our hospital capacity, vaccination rates and booster rates are up. Back on January 9, the peak of the winter surge, there were nearly 382 cases per 100,000 people. Today, there were under 31 cases per 100,000 people — among the lowest in the nation. The numbers are clear — we are seeing major improvement on the key metrics we’ve been tracking throughout this pandemic.   We are not where we were in early December, and I want to thank New Yorkers for doing the right thing to help us get through this winter surge. But make no mistake about it: This pandemic is not over. Our fight against COVID-19 continues, and I’ve put together a five-point toolkit that ensures we keep New Yorkers safe and plan for the future, including a first-in-the-nation effort to help those experiencing long-term effects from COVID. We’re moving in the right direction and our winter toolkit lays out our path forward.   Given the rapid decline of cases and hospitalizations, we are now lifting the statewide mask-or-vaccine requirement for indoor businesses starting today, February 10. Counties, cities and businesses can still choose to require masks. The mask requirement remains in effect statewide for specific settings like health care facilities, nursing homes, and schools.   We’re continuing to track many key metrics and to take steps to keep kids safe, including sending every K-12 student home with two COVID tests ahead of the Midwinter break. I’ll continue looking closely at the numbers and working with education partners, and I will make an assessment on school masking in early March.
THE LATEST ON THE NUMBERS
THIS WEEK’S COVID TRENDS. As of February 9, 2022, 4,398 New Yorkers are hospitalized with COVID-19. Our 7-day percentage positivity average is 3.88%, which is down from 5.51% last week. There were 30.88 cases per 100K statewide.      Per the CDC as of February 10, 2022, 85.0% of adult New Yorkers have completed their vaccine series. So far, 36,341,991 total vaccine doses have been administered, with 47,976 doses administered over the past 24 hours.

Submit your question here.       QUESTION: What can you do to ensure students are kept safe in schools from COVID-19? (Heather, Ontario County)     ANSWER:    I know how important it is to make sure our kids are safe and in the classroom. As part of our winter surge plan, we’ve distributed over 14 million tests to students in public, charter, and private schools. Masks are still required at schools throughout the state and I am working with teachers, administrators, school boards, & parents on any future guidance. The vaccines are among our best tools to keep our kids safe in schools, and New Yorkers age 5 and up are eligible to get the vaccine. You can learn more about how we’re keeping kids and staff safe in schools here.    New Yorkers, thank you for being smart, doing the right thing, and helping us to get through this winter surge.
