TODAY’S DAILY INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE ~ Jane Wagner

It’s all too easy to get swallowed up by the hustle and bustle of our daily responsibilities, whether it’s a hectic work week or a busy social schedule. But with these words, comedy writer Jane Wagner reminds us of the importance of taking a break and takin care of ourselves. Wagner, a veteran screenwriter who penned this line for her wife and longtime collaborator, comedian Lily Tomlin, points out an ironic truth: Often the quickest way to feel better is pausing to take a deep breath, and simply slowing down.

Mayor Lee Kyriacou Announces Spirit of Beacon Day

Hi Beacon. This is Mayor Lee Kyriacou, reaching out to announce Spirit of Beacon Day, as well as to encourage you to fill out a recreation survey.

I’m delighted to welcome back the Spirit of Beacon Day, which will be held on Main Street this Sunday, September 25th. This longtime community event was not held in person the past two years due to the pandemic, so we’re hopeful everyone will come out for this year’s celebration. The parade on Main Street kicks off at 1 p.m. after which the street festival will continue until 4 p.m. For more information and for opportunities to get involved as a volunteer, please visit www.spiritofbeacon.org.

Also, the City is conducting a public survey of our recreational programs, facilities and community services. The link to the survey can be found on the City’s website at www.beaconny.gov and will be open until mid to late-October. Please take a few minutes to let us know what you think of our parks and recreational programs; it will help us plan for the future.

Thanks, and I hope you all have a great week.

TODAY’S DAILY INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE ~ Eckhart Tolle

Spiritual guru Eckhart Tolle’s bestselling book “The Power of Now,” billed as a guide to spiritual enlightenment, encourages focusing on the present rather than fretting about the past or future. Tolle posits that being in control of the direction of one’s life is an illusion, and one that often leads to anxiety and disappointment. Only through the acceptance of the present can we begin to overcome those negative feelings and enjoy wherever life has taken us, as if it had been our preferred path all along.

TODAY’S DAILY INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE ~ Charlie Kaufman

Being unabashedly yourself is no easy task, but to screenwriter, director, and novelist Charlie Kaufman, it also yields your best creative work. Here, the mind behind such films as “Being John Malkovich,” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” acknowledges his self-doubt, but pushes for authenticity nonetheless. It’s easy to let our insecurity stop us from accomplishing what we want to do and becoming who we want to be. But art requires bravery, starting with letting go of the fear of not being enough.

DAILY INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE ~ Spike Jonze

The sci-fi romance film “Her” was director Spike Jonze’s solo screenwriting debut, and it’s safe to say he knocked it out of the park. The movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson, was nominated for Best Picture in 2013 and won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. It tells the story of Theodore (Phoenix), a man who falls in love with his artificially intelligent assistant, Samantha (voiced by Johansson). Theodore represents two of the film’s main themes: loneliness and isolation. Samantha brings him a ray of hope and helps to alleviate his depression, offering support through lines like this one, which reminds us that there is no limit to our capacity for love.

TODAY’S DAILY INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE ~ Jonathan Swift

Among the works of 18th-century Anglo Irish author and clergyman Jonathan Swift, none is more well known than “Gulliver’s Travels.” In the 300 years since its publication, the story of Gulliver has been referenced in countless songs, movies, and television shows. Swift was a satirist raised on rationalism and committed to the strong morals of his faith. In his writing, descriptive passages not only served to illustrate elements of his stories, but also gave insight into the characters conveying the descriptions. In Swift’s hands, words were indeed the clothing of thoughts.
