TODAY’S DAILY INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE ~ Joseph Addison

When, in 1702, British, Dutch, and Austrian troops beat the French at the Battle of Blenheim during the War of the Spanish Succession, English poet, essayist, and playwright Joseph Addison was asked to commemorate the occasion with a poem. The finished work was a wild success, and eventually led Addison to a career in politics. He wrote essays and plays throughout his later life, even as he moved through various government positions. He retired just a year before his death in 1719, but his prose lives on in lines like this one, cementing his position as one of the most influential writers of his time.

INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHTS ~ E.E. Cummings

Born in 1894 in Massachusetts, E.E. Cummings always knew he wanted to be a poet. When the First World War started, he was deployed in France and, despite the circumstances, fell in love with Paris. His poetic letters expressed this feeling and his preference for the company of French soldiers, which not only raised suspicions with the Americans, but led to his imprisonment as he was believed to be a spy. While some could easily be discouraged by this experience, Cummings used it to write his novel “The Enormous Room” in 1922 while living in Paris, where he returned after the war. This brief glance into the poet’s life suggests that the quote above was somewhat of a mantra for Cummings. When you feel discouraged, it can be comforting to remember that the easiest way is not always the right way, and staying true to who you are always pays off in the end.

TODAY’S DAILY INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE ~ Jane Wagner

It’s all too easy to get swallowed up by the hustle and bustle of our daily responsibilities, whether it’s a hectic work week or a busy social schedule. But with these words, comedy writer Jane Wagner reminds us of the importance of taking a break and takin care of ourselves. Wagner, a veteran screenwriter who penned this line for her wife and longtime collaborator, comedian Lily Tomlin, points out an ironic truth: Often the quickest way to feel better is pausing to take a deep breath, and simply slowing down.

Mayor Lee Kyriacou Announces Spirit of Beacon Day

Hi Beacon. This is Mayor Lee Kyriacou, reaching out to announce Spirit of Beacon Day, as well as to encourage you to fill out a recreation survey.

I’m delighted to welcome back the Spirit of Beacon Day, which will be held on Main Street this Sunday, September 25th. This longtime community event was not held in person the past two years due to the pandemic, so we’re hopeful everyone will come out for this year’s celebration. The parade on Main Street kicks off at 1 p.m. after which the street festival will continue until 4 p.m. For more information and for opportunities to get involved as a volunteer, please visit www.spiritofbeacon.org.

Also, the City is conducting a public survey of our recreational programs, facilities and community services. The link to the survey can be found on the City’s website at www.beaconny.gov and will be open until mid to late-October. Please take a few minutes to let us know what you think of our parks and recreational programs; it will help us plan for the future.

Thanks, and I hope you all have a great week.
