NYS Coronavirus Update: Lowest Single-Day Positivity Rate — First 10 Vaccine Scholarship Winners Announced

Yesterday, there were fewer than 17,000 COVID cases in the U.S. and New York, we saw a record-low positivity rate of 0.44 percent. And for the first time in over eight months, hospitalizations fell below 1,000. These numbers really show that vaccines work. New York is back, and that’s a testament to the New Yorkers who have stayed tough and smart over the last year. The vaccines are safe, free, and effective, period, and the sooner we get each and every eligible New Yorker vaccinated, the sooner we can finish off this pandemic once and for all.
Photo of the Day: New York is back.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations are at 970. Of the 128,002 tests reported yesterday, 565, or 0.44 percent, were positive. The 7-day average percent positivity was 0.60 percent. There were 245 patients in ICU yesterday, down seven from the previous day. Of them, 143 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 10 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11am yesterday, 65.7 percent of adult New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose. Over the past 24 hours, 77,131 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 19,226,670 total doses with 57.6 percent of adult New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See additional data on the State’s Vaccine Tracker.
3. Yesterday, we announced the first 10 winners of the State’s Vaccine Scholarship incentive. These 10 vaccinated New Yorkers will attend a SUNY or CUNY school with their tuition and room & board covered. And with four more drawings, there are still opportunities for a chance to win a full-ride, four-year scholarship to a state college or university. Learn more and get a shot to make your future.
4. A new pop-up vaccination site will open at Belmont Park to coincide with the 2021 Belmont Stakes. The site will operate adjacent to the Clubhouse Entrance of Belmont Park on Friday, June 4, from 12pm to 6pm and on Saturday, June 5, from 9am to 5pm. Racing fans who get vaccinated at the site will receive complimentary general admission to the 2022 Belmont Stakes.
5. Starting June 11, Citi Field will expand vaccinated seating capacity. The stadium will expand its vaccinated seating to 90 percent of the stadium for Mets home games. More fans, more energy—another reason to get vaccinated. Excelsior Pass is accepted at Citi Field as proof of vaccination.
6. The New York International Auto Show will return to the Javits Center this August. Thanks to the expansion at the Javits Center, the event will be held at pre-pandemic levels. Tickets for the auto show go on sale June 30.

Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: The Peregrine falcon chicks nesting at the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge need your help—they need names! Visitors to the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge can cast their vote for the three chicks that hatched this spring. Voting will be held through Sunday, June 6.

NYS Coronavirus Update: Rental Assistance Application Is Open — Toronto Blue Jays in Buffalo

New Yorkers are continuing to beat back COVID every day and as the numbers keep going down, we are able to get our economy back up and running and move our state into the future. Our 7-day average continues its decline and the positivity rate in every region is below 1.50 percent—the first time that’s happened since September 25. Our priority remains getting more people vaccinated. You can help by talking to friends, family and neighbors and pointing them to resources so that they can get all their questions answered.

There were 255 patients in ICU yesterday, up three from the previous day. Of them, 138 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 8 New Yorkers to the virus.

3. Applications for the program will be accepted starting June 1 for eligible New Yorkers who are behind on their rent and have suffered financial hardship due to COVID-19. The New York State Emergency Rental Assistance Program will provide assistance with up to 12 months of past-due rent, three months of prospective rental assistance and 12 months of utility arrears payments to eligible New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status.
4. New York’s ‘Vax & Scratch’ program has been extended through June 4. Get vaccinated at any of 10 state vaccination sites and receive a free NYS Lottery scratch off ticket with a grand prize of $5 million. Must be 18 or older to participate. Learn more.
5. The midnight curfew on indoor dining is now lifted. During the month of May we took major steps towards reopening our economy and as of May 31, we have lifted the midnight curfew on indoor dining for bars and restaurants across New York.
6. Today the Toronto Blue Jays play their first game at Sahlen Field in Buffalo with a fully vaccinated section. In partnership with New York State and the Buffalo Bisons and Erie County Medical Center, a new vaccination site at the field will provide vouchers for free Bisons tickets and participation in a raffle for other prizes for anyone who gets vaccinated there.

Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: Over Memorial Day weekend, local Boy Scouts honored our fallen soldiers by laying flags on the graves of 120 veterans. Boy Scout Troop 208 of Fairport, NY, visited the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery and laid flags to honor soldiers who fought to protect our freedoms. A great demonstration of respect and patriotism from young New Yorkers.

Today’s Quote: “More than cleverness, we need…”

More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.
Charlie Chaplin
When Charlie Chaplin wrote the script for his 1940 film “The Great Dictator,” he was making a bold choice. At a time when Adolf Hitler was in full power, the beloved filmmaker and comedian used satire to stand up for humanity and freedom. Chaplin included this line in the famous speech given at the end of the film. It’s an appeal to prize unity over hate in order to overthrow oppressors and live freely. The sentiment remains significant today: In a world that prizes power and success, it reminds us to value peace, harmony, and empathy.
