NYS Coronavirus Update: All New Yorkers Age 16+ Are Eligible for Vaccine Beginning April 6

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

Today, we take a monumental step forward in the fight to beat COVID. Starting tomorrow, March 30, all New Yorkers age 30 or older will be able to be vaccinated, and all New Yorkers age 16 or older will be eligible on April 6, well ahead of the May 1 deadline set by the White House. Eligible New Yorkers can make an appointment at ny.gov/GetVaccinated or by calling the NYS COVID-19 Vaccine Hotline at 1-833-NYS-4-VAX (1-833-697-4829). But whether you become eligible tomorrow or next Tuesday, be sure you schedule your vaccine appointment so we can get back to the things we all love.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations rose to 4,575. Of the 184,530 tests reported yesterday, 7,622, or 4.13 percent, were positive. There were 890 patients in ICU yesterday, up 13 from the previous day. Of them, 521 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 57 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11am this morning, 29.6 percent of New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose. Over the past 24 hours, 171,419 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 9,056,970 total doses with 16.8 percent of New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See data by region and county on the State’s Vaccine Tracker: ny.gov/vaccinetracker.
3. A new mass vaccination site will open in Rockland County. The State will establish an additional state-run mass vaccination site at Rockland Community College’s Eugene Levy Fieldhouse to further grow New York’s vast distribution network. The site is in development and is expected to open Thursday, April 1, with appointments opening on Tuesday, March 30, at 8am. Hours of operation for the Rockland Community College site will be from 8am to 7pm, seven days a week. Eligible New Yorkers will be able to make an appointment online or by calling the NYS COVID-19 Vaccine Hotline at 1-833-NYS-4-VAX (1-833-697-4829).
4. Indoor family entertainment centers and places of amusement are now open with a 25 percent capacity limit. Last month, I announced that indoor family entertainment centers will be able to reopen with 25 percent capacity and health protocols in place, which went into effect Friday, March 26.
5. Over 2 million vaccines have been administered at the NYS-FEMA mass vaccination sites. These six sites are hard at work getting eligible New Yorkers vaccinated as fast as supply allows. If you’re eligible, book your appointment today at ny.gov/GetVaccinated.

Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: There is no age limit when it comes to love. At the young age of 94, Joy Morrow-Nulton and John Shults of Kingston, NY, fell in love during the pandemic, and now plan to get married but on one condition—they both must be vaccinated. Now both Morrow-Nulton and Shults have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and can begin planning their vows for their wedding day. Congratulations to the happy couple.

NYS Coronavirus Update: Excelsior Pass Is Launched — New Partnership with SOMOS Community Care

As we continue to move vaccination forward we also need to revitalize New York’s economy and make sure we reopen safely. To that end, today we launched Excelsior Pass, a free and voluntary platform for businesses & individuals that can be used to easily access secure proof of a recent negative COVID test or vaccination. The question of “public health or the economy” has always been a false choice—the answer must always be both.

As more New Yorkers get vaccinated each day and as key public health metrics continue to regularly reach their lowest rates in months, the first-in-the-nation Excelsior Pass will assist as the next step in our fact-driven, science-based reopening. Learn more and have your testing and vaccination information in an easy-to-carry and share digital form.

We’re also wish our Jewish brothers & sisters a safe and happy Passover this weekend. Chag Sameach, New York—and celebrate safely.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations rose slightly to 4,603. Of the 282,449 tests reported yesterday, 8,507, or 3.01 percent, were positive. The 7-day average percent positivity is 3.37 percent. There were 913 patients in ICU yesterday, down 18 from the previous day. Of them, 558 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 49 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11am this morning, 28.2 percent of New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose. Over the past 24 hours, 239,288 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 8,471,160 total doses with 15.2 percent of New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See data by region and county on the State’s Vaccine Tracker: ny.gov/vaccinetracker.
3. The State is partnering with SOMOS to vaccinate underserved communities at community medical practices. In partnership with SOMOS Community Care, the State will provide COVID-19 vaccines directly to accredited primary care physicians in SOMOS’ health network who will vaccinate underserved New Yorkers. The program will initially cover 75 practices in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, and will scale up to 100 practices as supply allows. The program will launch in the coming weeks and New Yorkers will be able to make appointments directly through SOMOS. New York is committed to breaking down barriers to vaccine access for all.
4. In the third round of the program, Nourish NY has so far spent $3.5 million to help New Yorkers in need. So far, over 2 million pounds of raw milk has been turned into dairy products and distributed by food banks, along with 924,000 pounds of produce. Over two million households in need have received products sources from New York farms.

Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: A traveling library that started in Brooklyn, NY, will soon have a permanent home. In 2015, OlaRonke Akinmowo started the Free Black Women’s Library on the steps of a Brooklyn brownstone, featuring dozens of books by Black female authors. Akinmowo hoped to have a permanent home for her library, and thanks to a GoFundMe campaign, she is now looking for a long-term space in Brooklyn, where the library first started.

NYS Coronavirus Update: Free Citizen Public Health Training Program — 8 Million Vaccines Administered

As of yesterday, over eight million doses of vaccine have been administered in New York. Our large distribution network is steadily getting shots into people’s arms all across the state, but we need to be mindful that we are still in a footrace between the infection rate and the virus. The progress we’ve made is only as lasting as our continued vigilance. Community behavior matters. It is imperative that we continue to exercise safe guidelines even as more and more of our fellow New Yorkers get vaccinated. Wear your mask, social distance and then when it’s your turn—get the vaccine. And today we launched a unique training course where you can become even more knowledgeable on COVID and how to protect the health of your family and community. Details on this program, developed in partnership with Cornell University, are below—you can sign up here.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:

1. Enroll to become an NYS Citizen Public Health Leader. To continue the fight against COVID and prepare for the next public health emergency, the State announced the launch of a free, online Citizen Public Health Training course for New Yorkers. This innovative course, delivered by the New York State Department of Health in partnership with Cornell University and supported by the State University of New York, will prepare and equip New Yorkers to become NYS Citizen Public Health Leaders and build an informed network of community health leaders across the state. Enroll today

2. COVID hospitalizations dropped to 4,641. Of the 207,496 tests reported yesterday, 7,278, or 3.51 percent, were positive. The 7-day average percent positivity is 3.34 percent. There were 918 patients in ICU yesterday, down seven from the previous day. Of them, 596 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 71 New Yorkers to the virus.

3. As of 11am this morning, 26.9 percent of New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose. Over the past 24 hours, 154,705 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 8,029,749 total doses with 14.1 percent of New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See data by region and county on the State’s Vaccine Tracker: ny.gov/vaccinetracker

4. Remember, mental health resources are available for New Yorkers who need them. Now that it’s officially spring, we are slowly getting outside again and enjoying the warmer weather but we still recognize the mental and emotional strain many are feeling during the pandemic. New Yorkers can visit headspace.com/ny for free mindfulness resources or call our support hotline at 1-844-863-9314.

Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: Even a small gesture like a thank you card can have a big impact. Canadian citizen Beverley Perrin hand-wrote and delivered over 1,000 thank you cards to truck drivers for their work throughout the pandemic keeping shelves stocked. Beverley and her husband, Dick, distributed the cards at a truck stop in Tilbury, Ontario, with each card containing a message of gratitude for truck drivers’ essential work.

NYS Coronavirus Update: 100K Doses Administered at Stony Brook Vaccination Site — New Testing Partnership

We continue to make great strides in our vaccination progress. To date, New York has administered nearly 8 million vaccine doses, and the state’s expansive distribution network is hard at work getting shots in arms. Our NYS/FEMA mass vaccination site in Yonkers administered its 20,000th vaccine shot today and our vaccination site at Stony Brook on Long Island administered its 100,000th vaccine today.

Over the next few weeks, we expect to see vaccine production ramping up, and we have to make sure we have both the capacity to vaccinate and eligible New Yorkers ready to take the vaccine. If you’re eligible, get any of the vaccines available to you—they’re all safe & effective.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
 1. COVID hospitalizations rose to 4,681. Of the 143,521 tests reported yesterday, 6,801, or 4.74 percent, were positive. The 7-day average percent positivity is 3.33 percent. There were 925 patients in ICU yesterday, up 40 from the previous day. Of them, 596 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 53 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11am this morning, 26.5 percent of New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose. Over the past 24 hours, 137,814 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 7,875,044 total doses with 13.8 percent of New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See data by region and county on the State’s Vaccine Tracker: ny.gov/vaccinetracker
3. Reminder: New Yorkers age 50 and up are now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccines. New Yorkers can check their eligibility and schedule an appointment at ny.gov/GetVaccinated or by calling the NYS COVID-19 Vaccine Hotline at 1-833-NYS-4-VAX (1-833-697-4829).
4. We are expanding testing capabilities to commercial landlords. The New York Forward COVID-Safe Offices partnership with commercial landlords will expand access to COVID-19 testing for employers statewide. As part of the initiative, 21 participating landlords have committed to provide space and facilitate access to testing services for tenants interested in conducting regular diagnostic testing of employees.

NYS Coronavirus Update: New Yorkers Age 50+ Become Eligible for Vaccine Tuesday

Starting 3/23/21 at 8 a.m., New Yorkers 50 years of age and older will be eligible to receive the vaccine. We continue to kick vaccinations into overdrive throughout the state by expanding eligibility, establishing new vaccination sites and opening up eligibility to providers to reach new populations. New York’s distribution network is ready to handle an expected increase in supply, and we’re excited to expand eligibility even further as we move to get through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nevertheless, limited supply from the federal government means that New Yorkers should remain patient. If you are among those who become eligible tomorrow, check New York State’s Am I Eligible website to find an appointment (if available) at a State-run vaccination site near you, or call 1-833-NYS-4-VAX. VaccineFinder, a website affiliated with the CDC and Boston Children’s Hospital, can also help eligible New Yorkers find vaccination locations.

Here’s what else you need to know today:
1. COVID hospitalizations dropped to 4,470. Of the 152,328 tests reported yesterday, 6,361, or 4.18 percent, were positive. The 7-day average percent positivity is 3.29 percent. There were 885 patients in ICU yesterday, down 5 from the previous day. Of them, 576 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 46 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11am this morning, 26.1 percent of New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose. Over the past 24 hours, 103,425 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 7,737,230 total doses with 13.4 percent of New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See data by region and county on the State’s Vaccine Tracker: ny.gov/vaccinetracker.
3. Today we launched the “Roll Up Your Sleeve” campaign to encourage houses of worship of all faiths to sign up as vaccination sites. Religious leaders of all faiths are trusted voices in their communities and can help New York counter vaccine hesitancy and get the vaccine to harder-to-reach communities in a fair and equitable way. New York State is calling on medical providers to volunteer to partner with houses of worship to conduct vaccination clinics. Medical professionals and houses of worship who are interested in being involved can learn more and sign up at ny.gov/rollupyoursleeve.
4. Pharmacies can vaccinate New Yorkers with qualifying health conditions. Previously, pharmacies were exclusively vaccinating New Yorkers age 60+ and seniors. If you are eligible for the vaccine due to an underlying health condition or comorbidity, contact your local pharmacy or check the VaccineFinder website to see if there are available vaccine appointments at a pharmacy near you.

Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: A New York City teacher who became seriously ill with COVID a year ago reunited with the ICU staff who helped save his life. Tyrone John, a high school math teacher, was among the earliest people to become hospitalized in New York for COVID-19. Fortunately, he made it through. In a segment on the Today Show, he reunited with the staff who looked after him for weeks, including when he fell into a coma. One nurse reflected that John’s recovery “gave us hope” during the darkest moments of our state and nation’s fight against COVID-19.
