TODAYS DAILY QUOTE – NELSON MANDELA

Nelson Mandela

South African leader Nelson Mandela spent half a century fighting against the oppressive system of apartheid that segregated Black and white South Africans — a fight that led to his arrest in 1962 and a 27-year imprisonment. After his release from prison in 1990, Mandela spent the next four years participating in peace talks and negotiations to bring apartheid to an end, and in 1994 was elected as the first Black president of a revolutionized nation. Mandela never faltered in his belief in a more equal and just future, and that belief propelled him to act despite the risk. With this quote, from his 1994 memoir “Long Walk to Freedom,” he points out that courage and fear aren’t opposites; rather, true courage is taking action even when you’re scared. “The brave man,” he wrote, “is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

TODAY’S DAILY QUOTE – Thich Nhat Hanh

Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness.

Thich Nhat Hanh

Thich Nhat Hanh, a renowned Vietnamese Buddhist monk, teacher, and writer, has traveled widely to spread his teachings on mindfulness and nonviolence. His persistent peaceful campaigns calling for an end to the Vietnam War in the 1960s brought him worldwide recognition, as well as nearly 40 years of exile from his home country. Here, he advises us to let go of our attachments in order to find happiness. He writes that to cling to anything — “anger, anxiety, or possessions” — can encumber our experience of freedom. Thich Nhat Hanh has said “letting go is a practice,” and an art that can be cultivated daily. By recognizing and releasing our desires, fears, hurt, and resentment, we can live our lives more freely and joyfully.

NYS Coronavirus Update: Downscaling Mass Vaccination Sites

New Yorkers are continuing to fight COVID-19 throughout the state, and getting shots in arms is the key to our ultimate success. Unvaccinated people are at greater risk of getting seriously ill or worse from COVID. Getting vaccinated is a great way to protect yourself from more contagious variants of concern, including the Delta Variant. Millions of New Yorkers have taken the vaccine.
If you or someone you know has questions—talk to your doctor or visit ny.gov/vaccine.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations are at 348. Of the 51,890 tests reported yesterday, 573, or 1.10 percent, were positive. The 7-day positivity average was 0.88 percent. There were 78 patients in ICU yesterday, up four from the previous day. Of them, 36 are intubated. Sadly, we lost one New Yorker to the virus.
2. As of 11am this morning, 73.3 percent of adult New Yorkers have received at least one vaccine dose, per the CDC. Over the past 24 hours, 20,895 total doses have been administered. To date, New York has administered 21,577,298 total doses with 66.7 percent of adult New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See additional data on the State’s Vaccine Tracker.
3. Four mass vaccination sites will cease operations as of Monday, July 19. The mass vaccination sites at The Conference and Event Center Niagara Falls, Plattsburgh International Airport, SUNY Polytechnic Institute – Utica, and Jones Beach will cease operations. The State will reallocate resources on localized vaccination efforts in areas that have lower-than-average vaccination rates.
4. The vaccination site at the New York State Fairgrounds will relocate this Wednesday. Effective Wednesday, July 14, the New York State Fairgrounds site will relocate from the Expo Center to the Arts & Home Center.
5. In the third round of the program, Nourish NY has spent $15 million to help New Yorkers in need. So far, over nine million pounds of raw milk has been turned into dairy products and distributed by food banks, along with 3.7 million pounds of produce. Over eight million meals have been made for households in need using products sourced from New York farms.

Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: A 94-year-old great-grandma finally found the wedding dress of her dreams. Martha Mae Ophelia Moon Tucker of Birmingham, Alabama, got married in 1952—almost seven decades ago. At the time, in the segregated South, Black customers were not allowed in bridal shops, Tucker said. So Tucker’s granddaughter and other family members decided to give the family matriarch the experience of trying on and getting the perfect wedding gown. They made a visit to David’s Bridal and Tucker found the perfect dress.

Coronavirus Update from NY State Governor Andrew Cuomo dated 7/8/2021

NYS Coronavirus Update: 70% of All Eligible New Yorkers Have At Least One Vaccine Dose — Outdoor Dining Extended

We have come a long way since we began vaccinating New Yorkers late last year and so far, 70 percent of all eligible New Yorkers have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. We continue to fight this virus by getting more people vaccinated for the virus. You can help get us there by simply talking to friends or family who may be unvaccinated and encouraging them to talk to their doctor and get any facts they need about the vaccines. Spread the word and let’s vaccinate New York!

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations are at 347. Of the 98,677 tests reported yesterday, 607, or 0.68 percent, were positive. The 7-day positivity average was 0.68 percent. There were 80 patients in ICU yesterday, up three from the previous day. Of them, 39 are intubated. Sadly, we lost three New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11am yesterday, 72.8 percent of adult New Yorkers have received at least one vaccine dose, per the CDC. Over the past 24 hours, 43,808 total doses have been administered. To date, New York has administered 21,443,054 total doses with 66.2 percent of adult New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See additional data on the State’s Vaccine Tracker.
3. Outdoor dining rules have been extended for another year. Yesterday, I signed legislation that allows bars & restaurants to continue using municipal spaces for outdoor dining. Outdoor dining was popular throughout the pandemic and was an important lifeline for many businesses.
4. The pop-up vaccination sites at Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal have been extended through July 10. Individuals who get vaccinated at either of these pop-up sites can receive a free 7-day Unlimited MetroCard or two one-way Metro-North or LIRR tickets.
5. The Javits Center vaccination site will cease operations. At its peak, Javits vaccinated as many as 10,000 people a day and was the largest such site in the nation. The convention center became a symbol of New York’s vaccination efforts overall. Due to reduced demand and the success of the state’s vaccination program, Javits and two other State-operated mass vaccination sites—Suffolk County Community College (Brentwood) and SUNY Ulster—will stop operating as of Friday, July 9. The State will reallocate resources on localized vaccination efforts to better reach under-vaccinated communities in the State.
6. The New York Public Library reopened nearly all of its branches earlier this week. The Library’s many branches closed to the public in March of last year due to COVID, but as of July 6, the libraries have reopened across five boroughs—including the famous Rose Main Reading Room at the library system’s Main Branch on 42nd Street in Manhattan.

Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: History has been made at the Maid of the Mist. Henrietta native Kaitlynn McHenry has become the first female captain of the famous Niagara Falls tour-boat. McHenry first set foot on one of the fleet’s vessels as a tourist ten years ago. And after working on boats in various capacities throughout her life, including at the New York State Canal Corporation, she has become the first female captain in the company’s 175 years of operation. McHenry told the Democrat and Chronicle that she hopes to see more women in the maritime field.

NYS Coronavirus Update: Independence Day

This weekend, New Yorkers will gather together once again to celebrate our nation’s independence—a telling sign that we are returning back to the things we love with the ones we love. New York has made great progress in defeating COVID and we will keep fighting the virus by vaccinating New Yorkers. If you haven’t gotten vaccinated yet, I encourage you to do so. And I wish all New Yorkers a safe and happy Fourth of July weekend.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: The Coronavirus newsletter will not publish on Monday, July 5. It will resume again on Thursday, July 7.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations rose slightly to 370. Of the 80,956 tests reported yesterday, 411, or 0.51 percent, were positive. The 7-day positivity average was 0.44 percent. There were 86 patients in ICU yesterday, down five from the previous day. Of them, 45 are intubated. Sadly, we lost two New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11am this morning, 72.1 percent of adult New Yorkers have received at least one vaccine dose, per the CDC. Over the past 24 hours, 54,202 total doses have been administered. To date, New York has administered 21,197,633 total doses with 65.4 percent of adult New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See additional data on the State’s Vaccine Tracker.
3. Public employees cannot penalize employees who use sick leave for COVID-related absences. Today I signed legislation that will protect public employees who use sick leave or compensatory time to quarantine, seek medical treatment, or other leave related to a COVID-19 diagnosis or treatment. This new measure builds on previously signed COVID-related employee protections.
4. Get vaccinated and then enjoy the Fourth of July fireworks this weekend. The New York State Office of General Services and New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation are joining with partners again to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks and events from 6-10pm at the Empire State Plaza, including a pop-up vaccination site.
5. The pop-up vaccine sites at Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal have been extended through July 3. Individuals who get vaccinated at either of these pop-up sites can receive a free MetroCard or two one-way Metro North or LIRR tickets.

Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: A 70-year-old Yankees fan fulfilled her childhood dream and was named a bat girl for the team. When Gwen McLoughlin was 10, she wrote to the Bronx Bombers asking to be a bat girl but received a rejection from the team’s manager. This year, McLoughlin’s daughter sent the letter again to the team, and the current general manager wrote back inviting her to be an honorary bat girl—a wish come true for the lifelong fan.
