NYS Coronavirus Update: Become a NYS Public Health Corps Fellow

The effect of the Delta variant is being felt across the country, including here in New York, where new cases and the positivity rate have ticked up over the last several weeks. Largely, the COVID-19 pandemic is a “pandemic of the unvaccinated,” in the words of the CDC Director. Nearly all COVID deaths are unvaccinated individuals. If you’re already vaccinated, please talk to your unvaccinated friends or family about the dangers of the Delta variant and the importance in getting vaccinated before it’s too late. Anyone with questions or concerns about the vaccines should talk to their doctor. The best way to take full advantage of all that summer in New York has to offer is to get vaccinated.

Photo of the Day: Reminder that masks are required on public transit even if you’re vaccinated

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations are at 483. Of the 93,174 tests reported yesterday, 1,584, or 1.70 percent, were positive. The 7-day positivity average was 1.50 percent. There were 105 patients in ICU yesterday, up five from the previous day. Of them, 34 are intubated. Sadly, we lost two New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11am this morning, 74.1 percent of adult New Yorkers have received at least one vaccine dose, per the CDC. Over the past 24 hours, 29.397 total doses have been administered. To date, New York has administered 21,911,089 total doses with 67.6 percent of adult New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See additional data on the State’s Vaccine Tracker.
3. Applications for the New York State Public Health Corps Fellowship Program are now open. This first-in-the-nation program, in partnership with Cornell University, will train up to 1,000 fellows as the next generation of public health workers—helping NY be prepared for the next public health crisis. Apply to be a fellow today.
4. Four mass vaccination sites will cease operations as of Monday, July 26. The mass vaccination sites at Binghamton University at Gannett Drive, Aviation Mall in Queensbury, Stony Brook Southampton, and the Diana Center at SUNY Orange will cease operations so the State can allocate resources on localized vaccination efforts.

Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: Instead of using herbicides to manage foliage, landscapers in New York City turned to a more agriculturally sustainable method—goats. Last week, two dozen goats were herded into Manhattan’s Riverside Park for the second “Running of the Goats.” The goats indulged in a feast of various unwanted vegetation throughout the park, saving landscapers hours of labor. They will continue their diligent landscaping at the park until August 24.

Todays Inspirational Quote – Conan O’Brien

Conan O’Brien

In his 2011 commencement speech at Dartmouth College, comedian Conan O’Brien drew from his own experiences with disappointment to deliver this poignant quote. After O’Brien lost his job as host of “The Tonight Show,” he was able to turn that setback into success, becoming the host of his own long-running talk show. This quote reminds us that the very moments that look like failure can be opportunities in disguise — opportunities to learn, to grow, and to gain wisdom and clarity that can lead us to achieve even greater things.

Inspiring Quote For Today Wednesday July 21, 2021

Genius, like humanity, rusts for want of use. William Hazlitt

English essayist William Hazlitt is best known for his humanist writings, which stress free will and self-actualization. In 1826, he published “On Application to Study,” an essay discussing how staying engaged keeps us moving forward. With this line, Hazlitt suggests that the drive for knowledge keeps our minds sharp — that genius is a muscle that can be exercised. He wrote that “by continuing our efforts, as by moving forwards in a road, we extend our views, and discover continually new tracts of country.” In other words, we will always learn something new when we’re out looking for it with an open mind.

Today’s Quote: “Nothing succeeds like…”

Nothing succeeds like success. Get a little success, and then just get a little more.
Maya Angelou

In 2008, a journalist with “The Atlantic” interviewed renowned poet Maya Angelou about race, feminism, and how to break down the barriers many people face in life. Prejudices “have been built over centuries,” Angelou said, and we can’t break through them immediately. Angelou encouraged readers not to be discouraged or disheartened if the hard work doesn’t pay off right away, because with persistence, eventually we’ll see some success — and a little bit of success can be the best motivator to keep trying. “We mustn’t run out of steam,” she said, “but keep plugging away.”

NYS Coronavirus Update: New York’s COVID & Vaccination Progress

New York State continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic as more residents get vaccinated every single day, but we need everyone who hasn’t taken the shot yet to do so as soon as possible. With the Delta variant here in New York, the time is now to get vaccinated if you haven’t already. There are plenty of options where unvaccinated individuals can get the vaccines, from pharmacies to health clinics to pop-ups and more. Find a provider near you at vaccines.gov and protect yourself and your loved ones from COVID and other variants of concern.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations are at 340. Of the 81,951 tests reported yesterday, 956, or 1.17 percent, were positive. The 7-day positivity average was 1.04 percent. There were 75 patients in ICU yesterday, down four from the previous day. Of them, 34 are intubated. Sadly, we lost three New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11am this morning, 73.5 percent of adult New Yorkers have received at least one vaccine dose, per the CDC. Over the past 24 hours, 38,027 total doses have been administered. Masks required for all riders on public transit, and in certain additional settings, such as health care, nursing homes, correctional facilities, and homeless shelters.
4. To date, New York has conducted over 59 million tests. Getting tested for COVID regularly is a great way to ensure your health and the health of those around you. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID or believe you may have been exposed to the virus, get tested. Find a testing site near you. You can also call 1-888-364-3065 to make a free appointment at a New York State-run testing location.

Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: Actor and School of the Arts in Rochester alum Taye Diggs surprised his alma mater with a generous gift to help the school. Diggs, who has starred in Broadway musicals and films, graduated from the School of the Arts in 1989. To thank the school and its faculty for their influence on his career and life, the actor donated more than $75,000 for classroom supplies. The donation is part of the AdoptaClassroom.org nonprofit and through this donation, each faculty member will receive $750 each for their classrooms.
