TODAY’S DAILY QUOTE ~ Madame de Stael

Quote Image - Desktop Image

The path through life is not a straight line, and neither is the road to change. Political theorist Madame de Staël, who lived through the French Revolution and the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, explains here that it is human nature to make progress in increments, as our beliefs are challenged, reconstructed, and transformed over time.

TODAY’S DAILY QUOTE ~ Yohannes Gebregeorgis

Quote Image - Desktop Image

As many of us know, fear is often the greatest roadblock to our happiness and inner peace. What’s more, as Ethiopian philanthropist Yohannes Gebregeorgis points out here, it is also the enemy of wisdom. A champion of literacy in his home country and beyond, Gebregeorgis recognizes that we cannot begin to learn and grow until we conquer the things that scare us, and move forward with courage.

TODAY’S DAILY QUOTE ~ Bruce Lee

Quote Image - Desktop Image

When Bruce Lee’s TV series “The Green Hornet” was canceled after a single season in 1967, the actor began teaching private martial arts lessons to famous students such as Steve McQueen, James Coburn, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Pressed to name his unique fight style, 26-year-old Lee obliged with Jeet Kune Do, a Cantonese phrase meaning “The way of the intercepting fist.” This quote — uttered before Lee became a film icon with 1973’s “Enter the Dragon,” which was released just six days after his death — appears in Lee’s posthumously published “Tao of Jeet Kune Do.” With it, Lee suggests that a meaningful goal equates to a steep climb. Even if you don’t achieve your highest objective, the steps taken will lead you somewhere satisfying.

Get COVID-19 at-home tests shipped to you for free!

Good news! Each household in the U.S. can now have four free COVID-19 at-home tests shipped directly to their home at no cost!

All you need to do is visit COVIDtests.gov and enter your contact information and mailing address.

Order Now

The tests are rapid antigen “at-home” or “self” tests — not PCR tests which require a lab drop-off. The “at-home” or “self” tests can be taken anywhere and give results within 30 minutes.

Guard against scammers trying to steal your personal information. When ordering tests, use the official, secure government website: https://COVIDtests.gov. Watch out for phone scammers, too. If you get a phone call requesting information so that free at-home tests can be mailed to you, hang up — it’s a scam!

Remember: Medicare pays for COVID-19 tests performed by a lab, such as PCR or antigen/rapid tests, at no cost to you when the test is ordered by an authorized health care professional.

Those in a Medicare Advantage Plan should check with their plan to see if their plan offers coverage and payment for at-home tests.

Sincerely,
The Medicare Team

A Message from Beacon City Mayor Lee Kyriacou

Hi Beacon; it’s Mayor Lee Kyriacou with a brief update on COVID and test kits.

Counts:  COVID cases have peaked in Dutchess County and are on the decline.  In Beacon we have 127 active cases – lower than our peak but higher than we want.

Masks:  Please remember – per State Health Department requirements and CDC recommendations – a face covering is required in indoor public spaces other than a private residence, unless the space requires proof of vaccination.  We are almost these, so please let’s stick to the requirements together.

Test Kits:  The Federal Government has begun free distribution of up to four COVID-19 antigen home test kits for households.  Online, go to https://special.usps.com/testkits.  Every U.S. home is eligible without proof of ID, credit card, or health insurance.  Kits are expected to start shipping in late January.

The City of Beacon ran out of a small number of test kits almost immediately, but we are expecting more.  We will provide notice of local test kits by phone messages such as this, and on the City website at https://beaconny.gov/ and Facebook account.

Thank you for your keeping to our safety protocols throughout this pandemic.  Beacon has served as a model for the rest of the Hudson Valley.  More importantly, your dedication has saved lives.

TODAY’S DAILY QUOTE ~ Theodore Roethke

Quote Image - Desktop Image

Theodore Roethke’s poem “In a Dark Time” opens with an assertion: Hardships clarify who we are and what matters to us most. Without challenges to illuminate needs from wants, we risk taking aspects of our lives for granted. The Pulitzer Prize winner, who lost his father at age 14, understood the necessary alliance between darkness and light. As the poem continues, images are invoked of birds and insects, forests and caves, and the wind and the moon. Roethke believed his lifelong pull toward nature came from his father, who had owned and operated a 25-acre greenhouse in Michigan. “In a Dark Time” was included in Roethke’s posthumous 1964 book “The Far Field,” which won him his second National Book Award for Poetry.
